Introducing the New Triumph Bonneville T40 and T40 Black

The Bonneville name just got a lot more accessible. Triumph has unveiled two new 400cc classics - the Bonneville T40 and T40 Black - built to bring the full Bonneville experience to A2 riders and anyone who wants real character in a lighter, more approachable package.

Arriving at Blade Triumph from Spring 2027, these bikes carry every visual cue that defines a Bonneville - teardrop tank, peashooter silencer, spoked wheels, hand-painted coach lining - alongside a comprehensive modern electronics package that puts them firmly in the present.

The Bonneville Legacy, Opened Up

Triumph didn't set out to make a smaller Bonneville. According to Steve Sargent, Triumph's Chief Product Officer, the goal from the start was to create a motorcycle with genuine Bonneville style and a genuine Bonneville ownership experience - not simply to shrink an existing model down to 400cc. That distinction matters, and it shows in the result.

The foundation is Triumph's proven TR Series platform - the same 400cc single-cylinder architecture that underpins the Speed 400, Scrambler 400 X, and Tracker 400. That platform has now sold more than 60,000 units across more than 50 countries, which tells you something about how well the core engineering works. For the T40, Triumph's team developed a revised cylinder head and a dedicated Bonneville engine tune: lower idle speed, a more relaxed power delivery, and a distinctive exhaust note through the peashooter silencer that suits the character of the bike.

The result sits precisely where it should in the modern classic category - light enough to be genuinely approachable, with the quality of finish and breadth of specification to satisfy experienced riders looking for something more considered than the usual 400cc options. Both models are A2 licence compliant as standard, with no restriction and no modification required.

Who It's For

The T40 is a natural choice for A2 riders who want a proper motorcycle - not a starter bike - as their first machine. It's also well-suited to returning riders who want something lighter and simpler than a larger twin, and to experienced motorcyclists who appreciate the Bonneville's proportion and character for weekend riding.

At 191 kg ready to ride and 790 mm seat height (or 770 mm with the optional accessory low seat), it's manageable without feeling small. The centre stand is fitted as standard, which is a detail that matters once you use it.

Two Takes on the Same DNA

The T40 and T40 Black share an engine, chassis, and full electronics specification. Everything that separates them is in the finish - and it's a meaningful difference.

The T40 Black

For riders who want the Bonneville character without the chrome and the two-tone colour work, the T40 Black takes things somewhere darker. Gloss-black aluminium rims with bright steel spokes provide a sharp contrast, powder-coated engine casings keep the lower half of the bike consistent, and the header pipe and peashooter silencer are both fully blacked out.

Available in Matt Pewter Grey or Matt Phantom Black, the T40 Black has a more understated, purposeful presence - the kind of bike that doesn't announce itself loudly but rewards a second look. It's the same authentic Bonneville underneath; the difference is purely in what you choose to show.

The T40: Colour and Craftsmanship

The standard T40 is available in three two-tone colour combinations - Aegean Blue/Fusion White, Meriden Blue/Tangerine Orange, and New England White/Jet Black - all featuring hand-painted coach lining on the tank. Chrome mirrors, a chrome grab hoop, brushed aluminium heel guards, and brushed steel exhaust pipes complete a finish that's genuinely hand-detailed in a way that's become unusual at this price point.

The Triumph name appears on the handlebar clamp, front mudguard, engine covers, and lighting - not as badges applied as an afterthought, but as part of the considered design language throughout. The 18-inch front and 17-inch rear spoked wheels use aluminium rims with steel spokes, and the round LED headlight carries Triumph's daytime running light signature.

Classic Style, Current Technology

Modern classic styling and serious modern safety technology are not in conflict on the T40. Triumph has built a comprehensive electronics package into both variants without letting it intrude on the character of the riding experience.

4-Inch Circular TFT Display

The instrument cluster is a 4-inch full-colour TFT in a circular format that deliberately echoes a traditional clock dial. Switch it to Heritage Mode and the display presents as a single analogue-style speedo - clean, uncluttered, entirely in keeping with the rest of the motorcycle. Modern screen themes are also available for those who prefer a more contemporary layout. Five customisable widgets are accessible via the backlit left-hand switch cube, keeping frequently used information close to hand without requiring you to navigate through menus.

Smartphone Connectivity and Navigation

Bluetooth connectivity is built in as standard, linking the T40 to the Triumph Navigation App for turn-by-turn navigation, GPX route import and export, and route sharing. Music and call control operate through the handlebar switchgear, and a USB-C charging socket underneath the instruments keeps your device ready on longer days out. Self-cancelling indicators are also fitted, removing one of the smaller but genuinely useful quality-of-life improvements that often gets overlooked on smaller machines.

Five Riding Modes

Three preset modes - Road, Rain, and Eco - are joined by two fully customisable settings that let you dial in your own preference for throttle response and intervention sensitivity. Modes are switched by pressing the throttle against its stop with the engine running, which keeps mode changes quick without requiring additional switchgear. Each mode adjusts throttle response mapping, traction control sensitivity, and ABS intervention threshold independently.

Lean-Sensitive Safety Systems

Optimised Cornering ABS and Optimised Cornering Traction Control are both lean-angle sensitive - the system reads the bike's lean angle and adjusts intervention thresholds accordingly, so braking and throttle management feel natural through bends rather than abrupt. Cruise control is standard, and an Emergency Deceleration Warning flashes the rear light rapidly under hard braking to alert following traffic. Together, these systems provide a safety net that works with the riding experience rather than against it.

Engine and Specification

The T40's 400cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine is a new iteration of Triumph's TR Series unit, developed specifically for the Bonneville application. The cylinder head has been revised and the fuelling retuned for a lower idle speed and a more relaxed, linear power delivery than the Speed 400 - this is not a bike chasing peak outputs. It's tuned for the kind of smooth, flowing riding that suits a Sunday morning in the Cotswolds or an afternoon run through the Welsh Borders: pull up through the rev range without working the gearbox constantly, and the T40 rewards you for it. The distinctive exhaust note from the peashooter silencer is part of the package.

Blade Motor Cycles Limited an Appointed Representative of Automotive Compliance Ltd who is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA No. 497010). Automotive Compliance Ltd’s permissions as a Principal Firm allows Blade Motor Cycles Limited to act as a credit broker, not a lender, for the introduction to a limited number of lenders, and to act as an agent on behalf of the insurer for insurance distribution activities only.

We are a credit broker and not a lender. We can introduce you to a carefully selected panel of lenders, which includes manufacturer lenders linked directly to the franchises that we represent. We act on behalf of the lender for this introduction and not as your agent. We are not impartial, and we are not an independent financial advisor.

Our approach is to introduce you first to the manufacturer lender linked directly to the particular franchise you are purchasing your vehicle from, who are usually able to offer the best available package for you, taking into account both interest rates and other contributions. If they are unable to make you an offer of finance, we then seek to introduce you to whichever of the other lenders on our panel is able to make the next most suitable offer of finance for you. Our aim is to secure a suitable finance agreement for you that enables you to achieve your financial objectives. If you purchase a vehicle, in the majority of cases, we will receive a commission from your lender for introducing you to them which is either a fixed fee, or a fixed percentage of the amount that you borrow. This may be linked to the vehicle model you purchase.

Different lenders pay different commissions for such introductions, and manufacturer lenders linked directly to the franchises that we represent may also provide preferential rates to us for the funding of our vehicle stock and also provide financial support for our training and marketing. But any such amounts they and other lenders pay us will not affect the amounts you pay under your finance agreement; however, you will be contributing towards the commission paid to us with the interest collected on your repayments. Before we propose you to a potential lender, we will inform you of the likely amount of commission we will receive and seek your consent to receive this commission. The exact amount of commission that we will receive will be confirmed prior to you signing your finance agreement.

All finance applications are subject to status, terms and conditions apply, UK residents only, 18s or over. Guarantees may be required.
