As the evenings draw in and the temperature starts to drop, it's worth giving your Harley-Davidson a bit of attention, whether you're planning to keep riding through autumn and winter or tucking your bike away until spring. A few simple checks now can save you an expensive surprise later, and it means you'll be back out on the road the moment the weather turns in your favour.
Whichever camp you fall into, here's what our technicians at Cheltenham Harley-Davidson recommend, plus why now, rather than January, is the best time to get your bike booked in.
A flat battery is one of the most common reasons a bike won't start in spring. A trickle charger or an optional battery tender is worth the small outlay to keep the battery topped up and healthy over winter, rather than leaving it to self-discharge over several months of inactivity.
Tyres left standing in the same position for a long period can develop flat spots. Where possible, move the bike occasionally or use a paddock stand to take the weight off the tyres while it's parked up.
Fuel left sitting for months can degrade. Consider a full tank with a fuel stabiliser added, or run the tank low if you'd rather refuel fresh in spring.
A light coat of protective spray on exposed metal and chrome helps guard against corrosion, especially if the bike is stored somewhere that isn't fully dry, and a breathable cover is generally a better choice than an airtight one.
Plenty of riders keep going all year round, and with the right preparation, a Harley-Davidson is more than capable of handling colder, wetter conditions.
Tyres are the obvious place to start: check tread depth and pressures more regularly, as cold weather affects both, and grip matters more than ever on damp or icy roads.
Lights, indicators and brake lamps are worth a proper check too, given the shorter days and reduced visibility through autumn and winter.
For genuine comfort on cold mornings, heated grips and heated seats can be fitted by our technicians and make a real difference on longer rides, especially first thing when the temperature is at its lowest.
It's also worth having your brakes and general roadworthiness looked over, particularly if the bike has done a full season's miles since its last check.
Booking a service before winter properly sets in means our technicians can carry out a full check, fault finding with the latest diagnostic equipment, and any recommended work while there's plenty of availability, rather than joining the queue in the new year when everyone else has had the same idea. All of our technicians are manufacturer trained, and we offer complimentary waiting facilities plus a loan bike option, subject to a £20 CDW fee, to keep you moving while your Harley-Davidson is in with us.
Yes. Plenty of owners ride year-round. It's worth checking tyres, lights and brakes more regularly, and heated grips or a heated seat make cold-morning rides far more comfortable.
It isn't compulsory, but it's the simplest way to avoid a flat battery in spring. Without one, a battery left unused for several months can lose enough charge to need replacing.
Our menu-priced basic service, covering oil and filter, starts from £135. A full service includes valve adjustment, lubricants and coolant changes. Please confirm current pricing when you book, as menu prices can change.
Yes, a loan bike is available subject to a £20 CDW fee, and we also offer complimentary waiting facilities if you'd rather wait with us.
Whether you need a full service, an MOT, tyres, or simply want heated grips fitted before the cold weather arrives, the team at Cheltenham Harley-Davidson can help. Get in touch to book your slot before the pre-winter rush.

Blade Motor Cycles Limited an Appointed Representative of Automotive Compliance Ltd who is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA No. 497010). Automotive Compliance Ltd’s permissions as a Principal Firm allows Blade Motor Cycles Limited to act as a credit broker, not a lender, for the introduction to a limited number of lenders, and to act as an agent on behalf of the insurer for insurance distribution activities only.
We are a credit broker and not a lender. We can introduce you to a carefully selected panel of lenders, which includes manufacturer lenders linked directly to the franchises that we represent. We act on behalf of the lender for this introduction and not as your agent. We are not impartial, and we are not an independent financial advisor.
Our approach is to introduce you first to the manufacturer lender linked directly to the particular franchise you are purchasing your vehicle from, who are usually able to offer the best available package for you, taking into account both interest rates and other contributions. If they are unable to make you an offer of finance, we then seek to introduce you to whichever of the other lenders on our panel is able to make the next most suitable offer of finance for you. Our aim is to secure a suitable finance agreement for you that enables you to achieve your financial objectives. If you purchase a vehicle, in the majority of cases, we will receive a commission from your lender for introducing you to them which is either a fixed fee, or a fixed percentage of the amount that you borrow. This may be linked to the vehicle model you purchase.
Different lenders pay different commissions for such introductions, and manufacturer lenders linked directly to the franchises that we represent may also provide preferential rates to us for the funding of our vehicle stock and also provide financial support for our training and marketing. But any such amounts they and other lenders pay us will not affect the amounts you pay under your finance agreement; however, you will be contributing towards the commission paid to us with the interest collected on your repayments. Before we propose you to a potential lender, we will inform you of the likely amount of commission we will receive and seek your consent to receive this commission. The exact amount of commission that we will receive will be confirmed prior to you signing your finance agreement.
All finance applications are subject to status, terms and conditions apply, UK residents only, 18s or over. Guarantees may be required.
