There is nothing quite like riding a motorcycle on a warm summer day. Blue skies, dry roads and longer evenings make it one of the best times of year to get out on two wheels. But when the temperature rises, so does the temptation to ditch proper riding kit in favour of shorts, trainers or a T-shirt.
The problem? Riding without the right gear may feel cooler at first, but it leaves you exposed to serious injury, sunburn, dehydration and fatigue. The good news is that you can stay comfortable in the heat without sacrificing your safety.

Here are some practical ways to keep cool while still riding protected.

1. Choose the Right Summer Riding Gear
Not all motorcycle clothing is designed for cold, wet weather. Many leading brands offer lightweight summer jackets, trousers and gloves that are made specifically for warmer conditions.
Look for kit with features such as mesh panels, breathable fabrics, removable liners and ventilation zips. These allow airflow around your body while still giving you abrasion resistance and impact protection where it matters most.
A proper summer riding jacket will feel far more comfortable than a heavy winter jacket, but still offers protection.

2. Wear Base Layers
It might sound strange to add another layer when it is hot, but technical base layers can make a big difference. Lightweight moisture-wicking layers help draw sweat away from your skin, keeping you drier and more comfortable on longer rides.
Choose breathable performance fabrics designed for sports or motorcycle use.

3. Keep Your Helmet Ventilated
Your helmet is one of the most important pieces of safety equipment you own, so never be tempted to ride without one or with the visor fully open at speed.
Instead, make the most of your helmet’s ventilation system. Open the vents before you set off and consider using a helmet with good airflow if you regularly ride in warmer weather. A tinted or sun visor can also help reduce glare and make riding in bright conditions more comfortable.
Keeping your visor clean is also essential, especially in summer when dust, bugs and pollen can quickly build up.

4. Stay Hydrated

Dehydration can creep up quickly when riding in hot weather, especially when you are wearing protective kit. Even if you do not feel thirsty, your body can be losing fluids through sweat. Drink plenty of water before you ride and take regular breaks to top up. For longer journeys, consider using a hydration pack so you can sip water safely when stopped.

5. Plan Your Ride Around the Heat
Wherever possible, avoid riding during the hottest part of the day. Early mornings and evenings are often cooler, quieter and more enjoyable. Very hot weather can also affect your concentration, so planning your route with regular rest stops is a sensible move.
If you are heading out for a longer ride, check the forecast, plan fuel stops and give yourself places to cool down along the way. A short break in the shade can work wonders.

6. Protect Your Skin
Even with riding kit on, areas such as your neck, wrists and face can still be exposed to the sun. Apply sunscreen before setting off, especially if you are planning to stop for coffee, food or a walk around at your destination.
A lightweight neck tube can also help protect against sun exposure, wind and insects, while still being comfortable in warm weather.

7. Check Your Bike Before You Go
Hot weather does not just affect riders. It can also put extra strain on your motorcycle. Before a summer ride, check your tyre pressures, coolant levels, oil, chain condition and lights.Tyres are particularly important, as pressure can change with temperature. A quick pre-ride check helps keep your bike performing safely and gives you more confidence on the road.

Summer riding should be about enjoying the freedom of the road, not overheating or taking unnecessary risks. With the right kit, sensible planning and regular hydration, you can stay cool, comfortable and protected.

Blade Motor Cycles Limited an Appointed Representative of Automotive Compliance Ltd who is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA No. 497010). Automotive Compliance Ltd’s permissions as a Principal Firm allows Blade Motor Cycles Limited to act as a credit broker, not a lender, for the introduction to a limited number of lenders, and to act as an agent on behalf of the insurer for insurance distribution activities only.

We are a credit broker and not a lender. We can introduce you to a carefully selected panel of lenders, which includes manufacturer lenders linked directly to the franchises that we represent. We act on behalf of the lender for this introduction and not as your agent. We are not impartial, and we are not an independent financial advisor.

Our approach is to introduce you first to the manufacturer lender linked directly to the particular franchise you are purchasing your vehicle from, who are usually able to offer the best available package for you, taking into account both interest rates and other contributions. If they are unable to make you an offer of finance, we then seek to introduce you to whichever of the other lenders on our panel is able to make the next most suitable offer of finance for you. Our aim is to secure a suitable finance agreement for you that enables you to achieve your financial objectives. If you purchase a vehicle, in the majority of cases, we will receive a commission from your lender for introducing you to them which is either a fixed fee, or a fixed percentage of the amount that you borrow. This may be linked to the vehicle model you purchase.

Different lenders pay different commissions for such introductions, and manufacturer lenders linked directly to the franchises that we represent may also provide preferential rates to us for the funding of our vehicle stock and also provide financial support for our training and marketing. But any such amounts they and other lenders pay us will not affect the amounts you pay under your finance agreement; however, you will be contributing towards the commission paid to us with the interest collected on your repayments. Before we propose you to a potential lender, we will inform you of the likely amount of commission we will receive and seek your consent to receive this commission. The exact amount of commission that we will receive will be confirmed prior to you signing your finance agreement.

All finance applications are subject to status, terms and conditions apply, UK residents only, 18s or over. Guarantees may be required.
